What is Motability

Motability is the UKs leading car scheme helping disabled people become more mobile. It is a registered UK charity providing affordable, convenient and worry-free motoring to over 3 million disabled customers and their families.

The Motability Scheme enables disabled people to lease a new car by exchanging their Government funded mobility allowance.

If you receive either the Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (HRMC DLA), the Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (ERMC PIP) , the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS) or the Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP) you may be eligible to join the Motability Scheme.

John Mulholland Motors are accredited suppliers of SKODA and Hyundai vehicles for Motability in Northern Ireland and have undergone regular checks since accreditation to ensure that the high standards of Motability are met.

Are you eligible for a Motability car in NI?
You could join the Motability Car Scheme if you receive one of the following mobility allowances and have at least 12 months’ award length remaining:

Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (HRMC DLA)
Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (ERMC PIP)
War Pensioners Mobility Supplement (WPMS) Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)

Frequently asked questions

What happens with my current Motability car?

You continue to drive your current vehicle until your new vehicle is ready. When you collect your new car, your previous Motability vehicle is handed back by John Mulholland Motors who handles the admin of this process.
Are there any mileage restrictions on the Motability scheme?

Yes, you cannot exceed 20,000 miles per year.
Can a learner driver drive a Motabilty vehicle?

Yes, however, the learner driver must be accompanied by a driver with a full UK license and who is named on the insurance.
Can a young driver be added to the insurance?

Anyone over 18 years of age with a full UK license can be added as a driver, however, certain models are restricted to drivers over the age of 25. Give us a call to find out which Skoda and Hyundai models apply for those under 25 years of age.
Can I keep transfer my private registration number to my New Motability Car?

Yes you can transfer your private registration by notifying John Mulholland Motors who can process the admin of the transfer. An £80 transfer fee to the DVLA applies to retain the number. John Mulholland Motors do not charge an admin fee for this process.
Can I order additional factory options on my Motability car?

You can order additional factory options for your Motability Skoda or Hyundai. These options are chargeable at the manufacturer's RRP and payble upon collection of the vehicle.
Can my Motability car be fitted with adapations?

Yes, we work closely with McElmeel's who can assess a car for your needs.
