John Mulholland, one of Northern Ireland’s better known and most successful car dealers, has his sights set on Derry with a major new dealership opening next month. James Stinson reports.
Loyalty is a rare thing these days but John Mulholland has built his business on it.
“When I decided to go out on my own I went to my bank, which was the Ulster Bank at the time, and asked them for a £5,000 overdraft. I was never treated so shabbily by anybody in my life,” he recalls.
“I jumped in the car and drove to the Northern Bank in Randalstown. I got to see a very nice assistant manager called Peter Boyle. He sat and read the business plan, pushed it aside and said ‘what can we do for you?’
“I’m still with that bank today and I’ll never leave the Northern Bank come what may.”
“My attitude was that I would try to do everything, from the most menial of tasks, to the very best of my ability. I was very aggressive in trying to get myself on to the sales floor” John Mulholland.
