John Mulholland Ford Rally Team drives to success

John Mulholland Motors rally team comes 2nd in class at Killarney International Rally of the Lakes 2010.

Second outing for the team’s newest rally car - special wide-bodied Ford Ka 1.4 Kit Car.

John Mulholland Motors rally team scores top result with latest special wide-bodied Ford Ka 1.4 Kit Car at the Cartell.ie Killarney International Rally of the Lakes. The third round of the Irish Tarmac Championship was held over the May Bank Holiday weekend.

After 2 days of tough competition and unpredictable weather, the Randalstown car dealer finished first in class and 27th overall with his ‘Flying Blue Oval’ Ford Ka. But this second outing of John’s newest rally car did not come without plenty of drama!

After only two stages heavy rain poured down to make it difficult for all competitors. The crew, navigated by Eamon Gorman, had a big fright as John Mulholland explains: “We nearly lost it only two miles from the end of the stage. The heavens opened and our slick tyres skidded into a bank. Luckily we escaped without considerable damage and only lost 30 seconds. If we had have hit rock we would have been out then and there with a missing wheel”.

After this lucky escape, the team gained confidence as they became familiar with the Ka’s performance. The Ka kept performing well even on it’s intermediate tyres due to the extremely slippy conditions. This certainly did the trick, with John winning second in class and finishing 24th overall. He is now sitting as leader in class in the Irish Tarmac Chamionship and hopes the Ford Ka continues to be a success on it’s next outings.
